Seeing the funny side
I was a Londoner in a small country town, made free by marriage to explore during the daytime. I discovered furniture auctions, allotment holder's shows, listened to the market cheapjacks and the cattle sellers and because it was all so new, it was also excessively funny. I began to write it down in letters and through that formed the idea of making short articles out of the “funny side of country events for a big town paper. My articles met with immediate success, and now I make a point of watching all posters for announcements of forth-coming events however unlikely they may: sound as subjects. For example, a caged- show was announced, and as I had never seen one, I penetrated into the smoky room over the pub where it was held. Rows of caged canaries do not seem very humorous, but the sight of three gigantically fat men reproachfully pointing out the surplus flesh on a minute bird is enough to tickle any woman. -- it made an article and brought a cheque.
If the show is of something requiring technical : knowledge, a kindly exhibitor will often talk and supply interesting material or even the point of view of the ignorant is sometimes amusing. At local trade shows I always look for humour and usually find it -- as when our hairdresser offered a free beauty treatment to the brave soul who would be publicly experimented on. I got not only the treatment but ample material in the comments of the bystanders and my own sensations when enveloped in mud packs.
Unfortunately, as one settles down in a small town, its activities cease to have the humour of strangeness, but for the newcomer there is ample scope. But be sure to hide your small town under a decent veil of anonymity and send your contribution to the big town paper.
