LECTURES

ABB gave a number of public lectures with a literary theme. Notably in Sheffield he gave them under the “Lectures in the Free Libraries” programme. The intention of these lectures was to arouse in the working class population of Sheffield an interest in literature of high order. Similar programmes intended to bring the world of literature, science and philosophy to the wider population of the city were also organised by the university. The ones he considered his best, he typed up and retained. The transcripts of these five lectures are presented here along with any notes regarding the occasion of their delivery and background that I have been able to identify.
