The stars shine out with their wonted light,

And the leaves are green on the tree; t

here's one friend less in the world tonight,

And the loss that it means to me.

The days drag on, and the tears are dried,

And the world's as it used to be;

there's one lone chair by a lone fireside,

And the change that it means to me!

And one man owns a love confessed,

And one a heart that's free;

I clasp a shadow to my breast;

And the emptiness to me!

I start at the sound of phantom feet,

A phantom form I see;

And all in life that was most sweet

Is bitterness to me.

Ah! the sun will shine through the wintry wrack,

And flowers break over the lea;

But where is the Spring will ever bring back

The joy that is lost to me?
